THÜRINGENS SÜDEN® is a popular destination in summer and winter.

The city of Suhl has the highest proportion of forest in THÜRINGENS SÜDEN®: 70% (or 9,953 ha) of the total land area – equivalent to around 13,900 football pitches.

The “Rennsteig” is Germany’s oldest and best-known long-distance hiking trail with a length of around 170 kilometres.

Cultural heritage and natural heritage as neighbours: Wartburg Castle and Hainich National Park.

Rennsteig
#1- Rennsteig

Germany’s oldest and best-known long-distance hiking trail (about 100,000 hikers a year) casts its spell on people from all over the world. From the Werra to the Saale, it runs for almost 170 kilometres through the middle of THÜRINGENS SÜDEN®.

Wartburg von Außen
#2- Wartburg

Luther translated the Bible within its walls, German unity was demanded here and Goethe also visited from time to time – Wartburg Castle in Eisenach is linked to Germany’s history like hardly any other castle and is always worth a visit.

#3- Erletor Dam

The drinking water reservoir is located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve and is a paradise for hikers and fishing enthusiasts (more information on fishing at www.angelverein-erlau.de).). By the way: bathing is strictly prohibited here!

#4- Oberhof

Oberhof is the most visited place in Thuringia after Erfurt and Weimar. It is known as a German winter sports centre (for biathlon, luge, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined, among others). The World Championships held here are an annual highlight for sports enthusiasts – live as well as on TV.

#5- Altenstein Castle and Park

Near Thuringia’s oldest spa town, Bad Liebenstein, surrounded by a picturesque landscape park with a Chinese cottage, ornate carpet beds and vantage points into the Werra Valley, is the former summer residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen.

#6- Schneekopf

The second highest mountain in Thuringia offers a magnificent view of the Thuringian Forest. Hikers can take a break at 964 m above sea level in the highest managed hut and hiking hostel in Thuringia.

#7- Mountain lake Ebertswiese near Floh-Seligenthal

The former quarry near Floh-Seligenthal is now a popular destination for excursions and is located in a unique environment on the eastern slope of the 836 meter high middle Höhnberg.

#8- Twelve Apostles

The “Twelve Apostles” and “Judas” are a rock formation in the Kanzlersgrund. East of Oberschönau, the 13 rock towers of the “Twelve Apostles” line one of the most beautiful valleys in the Thuringian Forest. Volcanoes once left these impressive rocks of porphyry here.

#9- Hohe Stein

Not far from the 12 Apostles is the freestanding rock “Hohe Stein”. A hike there is rewarded with a fascinating panoramic view and good distant views.

#10- Dietzhäuschen Meiningen

The Dietzhäuschen, lovingly called “Meiningen’s most beautiful balcony”, is located only about 800 meters above Meiningen’s old town. After a short hike, a magnificent view of the theater town of Meiningen and the surrounding area awaits you here.
