Facts about sport
Sporty and active in THÜRINGENS SÜDEN®
Need some time out in nature? With movement, a panoramic view, fresh forest air and action? Here, you will find just what you are looking for:
Winter activities
“Rennsteig” in winter
Where mainly hiking enthusiasts cavort in summer, snow fans gather in winter: on cross-country skis, sleds, snowtubes, touring skis and snowshoes they conquer the slopes, trails and slopes of the snow-covered Rennsteig with its magnificent viewpoints.
Snowpark Oberhof
Where mountain bikes zoom down the slopes in summer, snowboards sled down into the valley in winter. Experienced riders will be delighted with various obstacles and tubes, while beginners can gain their first experience on the board. But of course, skiers on two boards will also find everything they need for a hearty swing into the valley.
Ski arena Silbersattel
The Silbersattel ski arena in Steinach is Thuringia’s largest ski area with three blue, two red and one black slope on eight routes, three ski routes and four lifts. In addition, there is a freeride area and 35 kilometers of cross-country ski trails.
Summer activities
“Rennsteig” in summer
From Hörschel near Eisenach to Blankenstein, the Rennsteig trail runs 169 kilometers through the Thuringian Forest and the Thuringian Slate Mountains. Along the route you will find everything a hiker’s heart desires: picturesque nature, panoramic views, adventure, sights worth seeing, culinary delights and accommodations for every budget.
The “GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf”
The annual popular sporting event on the Rennsteig has been one of the best-known and most popular cross-country races in Europe for 50 years now. Every May, up to 15,000 runners meet here to tackle distances ranging from a few kilometers to a super marathon together in the most beautiful natural surroundings.
Bike park Oberhof
Almost everything you can do on two wheels is possible here in the bike park: flow, freeride, downhill, jumpline, enduro, landing bag and pump track. The groomed trails await action-loving bikers from spring to fall, who can then be transported back to the mountain station by lift.
“Ilmtal-Radweg” cycle path
Over a distance of 123 kilometers, the bike trail leads from Allzunah at the source of the Ilm River along the Ilm River to its mouth in Großheringen. The mainly paved paths away from the main roads are particularly suitable for families with children.
Golf climbing park Oberhof
Climbing, swinging, jumping, playing golf – these are the family attractions in the Golf Climbing Park Oberhof. The spacious terrain with climbing park, 3000 m2 area for Adventure Golf, a giant swing and air cushion jump invites young and old to let off steam and romp in summer and winter.
Hotspots for climbing enthusiasts
In 2021, a new climbing area was added to the previous twelve in Thuringia: the “Trusetaler Hauptgang” on the outskirts of the town of Trusetal – with almost 60 routes from difficulty level 2 to 10. But climbers and boulderers also get their money’s worth in the “Kanzlersgrund”, the “Gehlberg”, the “12 Apostles”, the “Ilmenau Goethewand” and the “Eigersburger Felspartie”.
